How to deal with PCOD

By Hand On The Hip - 4/03/2017

Hello ladies!

PCOD or PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) is so common amongst young women today. It affects 1 in 10 women. I don't think we should be ashamed to talk about it. I have been suffering from PCOD for a while now and with the help of my doctor mommy and my sister in law who's a gynecologist, I have managed to fight it and still continue to do so!

For starters, what is PCOD?
As the name suggests, the ovaries of a PCOD victim has cysts in it. These cysts are not particularly harmful or life threatening, but might cause a lot of hormonal imbalance. Although the cause is not fully understood, it may have been noticed that genetics is a factor.

What happens when there is a hormonal imbalance?
Well, your body is constantly having hormonal changes and that triggers a lot of changes in your body. For instance, excess male hormones (androgens) might get produced in your body which might lead to lack of ovulation and as a side effect, you might get excess acne or facial hair. Another problem that is caused due to PCOD is insulin resistance and due to this, you might have a high chance of getting diabetes in the future.

What are the symptoms of PCOD?
Apart from acne and extra facial hair that I already mentioned, you tend to have irregular period, weight gain, thinning of hair on your scalp, depression, fertility problems etc.

If you don't show these symptoms, how do you know if you actually have PCOD?
Just go to the nearest gynecologist and get the tests recommended by her. An ultra sound and some blood tests and you'll know for sure!

How do I fight it?
  • I have been told time and again that I should do all I can in my power to keep my weight under control. The moment I gain some weight, I see a lot of changes in my body. Reducing even 5% of the excess weight gained helps a lot! I go to my fitness center 5 times a week for Zumba, Trio HIIT, Body Combat, Bolly Aerobics, Body Pump and TRX.
  • I make sure that I don't eat more than necessary. I try to eat less carbs, more protein and at least one fruit a day. These things help me stay in shape. Here's a 7-day Weight Loss Plan you can check out.
  • If you are a smoker, then you better put those ciggie wiggies away! Smoking only makes matters worse!
  • There is no permanent cure, but if you go see a gynecologist, she might suggest hormonal therapy. It should be considered only if weight loss doesn't help. But believe me, this did me no good! I gained a ton of weight, developed more acne than ever and was more depressed than usual when I took external hormones. Somehow it did not help me in any way. This also has a high risk of one getting diabetes, cholesterol, heart disease and blood pressure.

Don't worry too much about this, my lovely ladies. There's always a way out! In my opinion and personal experience, every girl with or without PCOD should be hitting the gym regularly. Considering the kind of lifestyle we have adapted to, the least we can do is stay fit. For more information on women's health, check out Check Pregnancy.

Good luck to all you women out there!

Love,
