Simple Steps to Looking More Photogenic

By Hand On The Hip - 7/30/2018

Being photogenic isn’t the be all and end all. If you have spotted someone like Celeste Barber on Instagram, you will see that she has managed to make a huge career and following of not looking her best. But when you’ve got a special occasion coming up, a family photo shoot, or just want to get a great vacation selfie, knowing how to look your best and be more photogenic will help you to get the photos that you want. And really, being photogenic is more about how you hold yourself and the posture, rather than what your hair looks like that day. So with that in mind, here are some tips to help you to be more photogenic and help you to feel more confident in photographs.

Show Side of Your Face

Having your face straight on and facing forward can be quite intense for a picture, and if you haven’t got your posture right, can even leave you looking a little photoshopped (if your shoulders are high and tense, for example). We all do tend to have a side of our face that we prefer, and showing just one side, the one that you prefer, can be way more flattering.

Don’t Say Cheese

The traditional ‘say cheese’ when having a photograph taken can be quite intense and can actually force your smile to be quite an unnatural pose, even a grimace. You want to create a look that relaxes your face more but still shows a natural smile. Saying the day of the week instead, like Tuesday or Thursday, can help to create a natural look, even a little more sultry than anything, rather than a cheesy grin.

Tongue Behind Teeth

The tongue is a muscle in your mouth, and it does have a little bit of control over what your mouth does. So try smiling as you would normally. Then try again with your tongue placed behind your teeth. This helps you to smile but without it being too wide and toothy, and as a result, it won’t cause your eyes to wrinkle. Speaking of which, using your eyes to smile, will help you to look happy, even if you’re not in full-grin-mode.

Take Care of Your Teeth

Your teeth and your mouth are the things that show off when you smile. And if you’re not taking care of them or not keeping them clean, then it will be an instant turn-off when you smile. So instead, you need to be taking care of them each day, at least twice a day. If you really dislike your teeth, then you could ask your dentist about something like digital smile design to see what you’d look like with particular cosmetic dentistry. Then you’ll be smiling from ear to ear!

Think About Angles

The angles that you pose at has an influence on what you look like in a photograph, as well as bearing in mind the angles that the camera is taken with. If the camera is below you, then you need to think about what you’re doing with your head; looking down can mean double chins, for instance.
