Could Your Lifestyle Cause You To Age Faster?

By Hand On The Hip - 2/05/2020

Maturity lends one a certain sense of confidence, assurety and self-belief. And that’s both empowering and attractive. Perhaps that’s why we’re seeing more and more women all over the world ditch the dye and wear their grey or silver hair with pride. In an era where people well into their 50s can achieve athletic wonders while also looking great, the old adage that age is just a number is proven right with increasing frequency.

Still, that doesn’t mean that we don’t need to look after ourselves and our health if we expect to stay nifty over fifty. Especially when many of the trappings of the 21st century lifestyle can actually make us age faster. Here we’ll look at some health and lifestyle issues that can accelerate our aging and what can be done about them…

Stress

Stress takes its toll on the body and the mind. When our minds are stressed, our bodies create more of the stress hormone cortisol which can make our bodies age faster at a cellular level. So taking that much needed holiday could just save your life.

What’s more, cortisol makes us store more body fat which can make us look and feel older. It can also push us into impulsive or reckless behaviours which can also do us few favours, especially when we unwind in all the wrong ways. Which brings us to...

Smoking and drinking

For many of us, cigarettes and alcohol are our go-to forms of stress relief, helping us to unwind at the end of a long, hard working week. But both nicotine and alcohol can cause our skin to get dehydrated and age faster, resulting in more profound fine lines and wrinkles.

Alcohol should be enjoyed sparingly and responsibly, while cigarettes should be dropped altogether. Use this website to check out some alternatives. Electronic cigarettes can be a useful way of mitigating the health risks of smoking and eventually giving up altogether.

Crash diets

A balanced diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. And the best way to achieve sustainable results when it comes to keeping our bodies and minds in tip top shape. The trouble is that in this day and age we want it all, and we want it fast. As a result, we opt for crash diets which get fast results which invariably don’t last. What’s more, the metabolic to and fro caused by yo-yo weight gain and loss can cause our skin to sag and for our energy levels to fluctuate, making us look and feel older.

Processed food

Finally, while the odd fast food burger or microwaved ready meal is okay as part of a balanced diet, too much processed food can put a real strain on your body and accelerate the ageing process. A wholefoods-rich diet that consists either mostly or entirely of plant based foods can help your body and mind to stay younger, leaner and healthier. This is because many plants are rich in antioxidants that combat the cellular damage caused by free radicals which can lead directly lead to accelerated ageing.
