Back To Basics

By Hand On The Hip - 3/07/2019

Getting back to basics is not a phrase that the modern urbanite wants to hear very often but there are times when adopting an old-school approach to our lifestyles can offer incredible benefits. We take a look at some ideas for improving your quality of life with some simpler ways of living and being.
Good old fresh air
When your idea of some downtime is heading to your nearest hipster café and making use of their Wi-Fi while you hover on social media, you know it’s time to change it up. When you get some time and space to yourself consider instead taking a walk somewhere beautiful, leave your phone in your bag, don’t take photos or think in terms of Insta posts but instead take a big lungful of clean, fresh air that will help restore balance and equilibrium to your body and mind.
If you need more of a purpose to getting outside, think about taking up a hobby like gardening that will get you working your body and give you a sense of fulfilment and achievement when you produce your first organic fruit and vegetables, fresh from the soil and ready to go straight on your plate. If indoor gardening is more your thing, then this website will give you some ideas on how to get started.

Screen ban
It might be time to take a day or two for a screen detox. Freeing yourself from constantly checking emails, social media updates and even Netflix can be scary but it is also immensely liberating. You might even find it helps you to sleep better and gives you more time to spend chatting with friends and family and finding other, more productive ways of entertaining yourself.
If a day sounds like too much, then start with an hour over your lunch when you really focus in on where you are and what you’re eating. Creating an hour where you are entirely present and mindful will help give you greater calmness in your life and help you to deal with anything negative rather than simply distracting yourself from it.
Eat fresh
With the abundance of home delivery and convenience food, eating fresh, home cooked food is often way at the bottom of your list but if you’ve found yourself feeling sluggish and lethargic then learning to cook some great quality, delicious and fresh meals could transform your quality of life. Try and get a rainbow going on your plate, incorporating vegetables of all types with plenty of colour. You don’t have to be a master chef but learning to cook from scratch can save you money as well as having health benefits.
When life happens around you and you find yourself caught in its whirlwind, taking time to step back and imposing some rules to create a calm and healing environment can be a lifesaver.  Going back to basics can buy you back time and equilibrium, so invest in your mental and physical health now for a happier and healthier future you.
