Simple Ways to Make Your House More Beautiful

By Hand On The Hip - 10/03/2017

When you think about sprucing your home up a bit, you’re probably focusing more on the interior design aspect of it rather than its outside. It is, after all, where you spend the most time - and fixing up the inside of your home tends to be a lot more fun, right?

Now that summer is almost upon us it is, however, a good idea to find ways to make your house a bit more beautiful on the outside as well. You’re going to be spending a lot of time in the garden, hopefully, cooking up meals with your family on the BBQ.

Give the outside of your home some extra thought this season and have it ready to be enjoyed before the weekend. That way, you’ll have the shiniest home in the neighbourhood and can feel confident that your neighbours suspect your home to be just as good-looking on the inside as it is on the outside.

Here is a handful of tips on how you can do exactly this. It will help your house to look good for longer as well, by the way, so that you don’t have to think about doing it again before next year’s summer is upon us.

First: Keep the driveway clean

Keeping the driveway clean and tidy is a great foundation for this journey. It doesn’t really matter how much effort you put into the garden or just how clean you keep the exterior of your house if the driveway is littered with bicycles, boots, leaves, and weeds.

Start to clean it up right away, in other words, and you can get started on the rest a bit later.

You might want to get a high-pressure washer to clean the most stubborn dirt from the driveway, first of all, and remember to de-weed it properly. This isn’t just a once-off job, though, and you should try to maintain it like this if you’d like it to stay pretty for the rest of the summer.

The driveway is, after all, where your friends and family members will walk up before they enter your house and it’s kind of the first impression they get of how tidy and neat you are. Treat it to a few potted flowers as well or at least a couple of shrubs to create the right kind of atmosphere.

Think about the windows

Right after finishing up the driveway, you should take a look at your windows. So many people neglect this part of their house and it is bound to ruin the impression as a whole; spend a short hour or two on giving them a proper wash, however, and your house is going to sparkle in the warm summer sun.

Have a look at this article to learn more about how you can clean those windows properly, by the way, and even avoid those annoying streaks that tend to appear.

A tried-and-tested trick is to clean it with newspaper, by the way, and avoid cleaning them on the sunniest day as this will guarantee you a poor result.

Next: Think about the flower beds

Nothing says a well-kept and beautiful home like a happy flower bed. Fill them with colourful little flowers and remember to read up on how to keep them healthy and alive; half-dead flowers are surely going to ruin the impression you’re trying to give.

Try to spend at least one time of the week to de-weed your garden, tend to your flowers, and re-pot the ones that are getting too big for their current pots. If you’re new to this whole gardening thing, you should definitely have a look at this article to learn more about how you can keep your plants alive and happy.

That way, the plants you have will be able to grow large and strong without you having to replace them with new ones every other month.

Keep in mind that you should spend just as much time on maintaining the lawn. Grass is, luckily, perfectly able to grow on its own without much help - all you need to do is to make sure it looks neat and tidy.

Plant it and it will grow, in other words. If you’re not getting enough rain lately, you might want to water it yourself, though; just place the sprinkler out and move it around every tenth minute. It’s really not harder than that.

Paint your fence and wash your doors

Finally, you need to put those finishing touches on the outside of your home. An old and shabby-looking fence is surely going to take people’s eyes off your lovely flower beds and well-kept lawn so make sure that you have a short afternoon ready to give it a stroke of paint.

White is, in general, a safe choice but don’t be afraid to go for another colour as long as your neighbourhood allows for it.

Another point to this is that you need to make your doors look just as great as the rest. Have a look at these b&d roller doors, for example, in case you’re due for an upgrade - or simply give the one you have a good wash.

The outside of our doors tend to gather a lot of dust and dirt, and you’ll be surprised at how much cleaner you might be able to get them.

Remember to keep the clutter at a minimum, tend to your garden’s needs, and let your windows shine in the sun. Now you can look forward to a couple of months of complete bliss, knowing that your house is the most beautiful one on the block.
